What Does AAAA Mean on Weed? Grading Letters Explained

Photo by Terrance Barksdale on Pexels

AAAA is a grade sellers use to signal top-shelf flower: dense, frosty buds with strong aroma and higher THC. The catch is that no one regulates these letters, so AA, AAA, AAAA and AAAA+ mean whatever the seller decides they mean. At Saint John Bud Express we get asked about grades by customers across Saint John all the time, so here is what the letters usually describe and how to judge flower for yourself.

Where do the letters come from?

An informal market habit. Letter grades grew out of the Canadian cannabis scene long before legalization. They borrowed loosely from the way eggs and beef are graded: more letters, better product.

Not an official standard. There is no governing body, lab threshold or checklist behind the grades. Two sellers can put the same bud in different tiers. The letters are a shorthand for quality, not a guarantee of it.

What does each grade usually mean?

Treat this as the general sense most people share, not a rulebook:

  • AA: budget flower. Often smaller or looser buds, some shake, milder aroma. Fine for rolling, baking or everyday use when price matters most.
  • AAA: solid mid-grade. Good structure, decent trichome coverage and a pleasant smell. A lot of everyday smokers live here.
  • AAAA: top-shelf. Dense, well-trimmed buds, heavy trichome frost, a loud nose and usually higher THC.
  • AAAA+ (sometimes AAAAA or "craft"): the best a seller carries. Small-batch, carefully grown and cured, and priced to match.

How can you judge quality without the letters?

The letters are a starting point. Your own senses tell you more.

Look

Trichomes. Those are the tiny crystal-like hairs that make good bud look frosty. Heavy coverage is one of the strongest signs of quality flower.

Structure and trim. Top-shelf buds tend to be tight and neatly trimmed, with few stems and leaves. Fluffy or airy buds are not necessarily bad, since some strains grow that way, but very loose, leafy bud usually sits in a lower tier.

Colour. Healthy flower is usually green, sometimes with purple, orange or red hairs. Brown, dull or greyish bud is often old or poorly stored.

Smell

Aroma is a big clue. Strong, distinct scents like citrus, pine, gas or berry come from terpenes, and a good cure preserves them. Flower that smells like hay or nothing at all may be old or rushed through drying.

Feel

Slightly sticky, not soggy. Good bud should feel a little springy and break apart without crumbling to dust. Very dry flower burns harsh; damp flower burns poorly and can grow mould.

Smoke

A clean burn and smooth taste. Well-grown, well-cured flower usually smokes smoothly and keeps its flavour. Harsh smoke can point to a poor cure.

Does a higher grade always mean higher THC?

Usually, but not always. Top grades often test higher, but THC is only part of the experience. Terpenes, the strain itself and your own tolerance all shape how a bud feels. Some people find a well-made AAA with a flavour they love more enjoyable than an AAAA that is simply strong.

Freshness matters as much as the letters. A great bud stored badly can lose aroma and potency. Our guide to how to store weed covers how to keep flower at its best once it is home.

Should you buy top-shelf or budget?

It depends on how you smoke.

Budget and mid-grade make sense for: daily use, rolling big joints, baking, sharing with friends, or buying in bulk. Our cheap ounces are built for this.

Top-shelf makes sense for: special occasions, savouring flavour, or when you smoke a little and want it to count. Browse our luxury buds when you want the good stuff.

The Bottom Line

AA to AAAA+ is a helpful shorthand, but it is an informal one, so trust your eyes and nose as much as the label. Look for frosty trichomes, a strong smell and a good cure, then pick the tier that fits how you smoke. Have a look through our flower and order it to your door with weed delivery in Saint John.
