How to Store Weed So It Stays Fresh

The best way to store weed is in an airtight glass jar, kept somewhere cool and dark, with humidity held steady around 58 to 62 percent. Do that and good flower keeps its smell, flavour and strength for months. At Saint John Bud Express we want what you order in Saint John to be as good on the last gram as the first, so here is how to keep it that way.

Why does storage matter?

Trichomes are fragile. The frosty crystals on cannabis hold most of its THC and terpenes. Air, light, heat and rough handling all wear them down.

THC breaks down over time. Exposure to light and air slowly converts THC into other compounds. Old, badly stored flower often feels weaker and duller.

Terpenes evaporate. The aroma and flavour of a strain come from terpenes, and they are some of the first things to fade when bud dries out or warms up.

Moisture causes mould. Store weed too damp and it can grow mould, which you should never smoke.

What is the best container?

Glass jars with a tight seal. Mason jars or purpose-made cannabis jars are the gold standard. Glass does not add smells or flavours and seals well.

Pick the right size. Too much empty space in a jar means extra air around your flower. Choose a jar your bud mostly fills.

Skip plastic bags long term. Thin plastic lets air through, holds static that pulls trichomes off, and squashes buds. Fine for getting home, not for keeping.

Tinted glass helps. Amber or UV-blocking jars add protection from light, though a dark cupboard does the same job.

What about humidity?

Aim for 58 to 62 percent. That range keeps flower springy and sticky without being wet.

Use a two-way humidity pack. These small packs release or absorb moisture to hold a jar at a set level. Drop one in, close the lid, and replace it when it goes stiff.

Signs of trouble. Bud that crumbles to dust is too dry and will burn hot and harsh. Bud that feels spongy, smells musty or shows white fuzz is too wet; mouldy flower should be thrown out.

Where should you keep the jar?

Somewhere dark. A cupboard, drawer or closet shelf works. Keep it away from windows and bright light.

Somewhere cool. Room temperature or slightly below is ideal. Avoid spots near the stove, a heater, a sunny window or the top of the fridge where warm air collects.

Away from kids and pets. Use a container with a lid that is hard for little hands to open, and store it up high or locked away.

Should you keep weed in the fridge or freezer?

The fridge is usually a bad idea. Fridges are humid and their temperature swings every time the door opens. That can create condensation inside the jar and invite mould.

The freezer is risky too. Freezing makes trichomes brittle, so they snap off when you handle the bud. If you do freeze flower for very long storage, seal it airtight and let it come to room temperature before opening the jar so moisture does not form on it.

For most people, a cool dark cupboard is the answer.

What about edibles, hash and vapes?

Edibles: follow the package. Keep them sealed, cool and well out of reach of kids and pets, since they look like regular treats. Our guide to how long edibles take covers using them safely.

Hash and kief: store in a small airtight container or parchment inside a jar, somewhere cool and dark. Pressed hash generally keeps better than loose kief. See kief vs hash for more.

Vape carts: store upright, at room temperature, out of the sun.

How long does weed last?

Months when stored well. Properly stored flower can stay in good shape for six months to a year, though most people notice it is at its best in the first few months.

It does not really "expire," but it fades. Old flower usually is not harmful unless it is mouldy, but it will smell and taste flatter and feel weaker.

Buy for how fast you smoke. If an ounce would take you a long time to get through, keep most of it sealed in a jar and fill a smaller daily jar so you are not opening the big one every day.

The Bottom Line

Glass jar, tight lid, steady humidity, cool and dark: that is all good storage takes. Skip the fridge, keep it away from kids and pets, and buy amounts you will enjoy while they are fresh. Browse our flower and accessories, and order with weed delivery in Saint John.
