Shatter vs Wax vs Budder: What's the Difference?

Shatter, wax and budder are all cannabis concentrates made the same basic way, and the real difference between them is texture: shatter is glassy and brittle, wax is crumbly and soft, and budder is creamy and whipped. At Saint John Bud Express we get asked about these three more than any other concentrate, so here is a plain guide for anyone in Saint John trying to choose between them.

How are shatter, wax and budder made?

All three usually start the same way. Cannabis is washed with a solvent that pulls out the cannabinoids and terpenes, then the solvent is purged off, leaving a sticky extract behind. What happens next decides the final form.

Left alone, it sets like glass. If the extract is purged gently and left undisturbed, the molecules stay locked in place and it hardens into a clear, amber sheet. That is shatter.

Stirred or whipped, it changes. If the extract is agitated during or after purging, it starts to crystallize and trap air. A little agitation gives you a dry, crumbly wax. A lot of whipping, often with a bit more heat and moisture, gives you a soft, frosting-like budder.

So the "type" is mostly about handling, not about a different plant or a different process from the ground up.

What does each one look and feel like?

Shatter

Glassy and snappable. Good shatter is translucent, amber to gold, and snaps cleanly when cold. On a warm day it can go soft and taffy-like, which is normal.

Tidy to handle. Because it is solid, it breaks into pieces you can pick up with your fingers or a tool. It is the least messy of the three once you get used to it.

Wax

Opaque and crumbly. Wax looks like dry honeycomb or soft cheese. It is usually lighter in colour than shatter and breaks apart instead of snapping.

A little sticky. It can cling to tools and fingers, so most people use a small dab tool to scoop it.

Budder

Smooth and creamy. Budder looks like whipped butter or cake icing. It is soft, spreads easily and holds its shape on a tool.

Often more aromatic. Some people find budder smells and tastes stronger than shatter, because the whipping process can hold onto terpenes. Results vary a lot from batch to batch, so treat that as a tendency, not a rule.

Is one stronger than the others?

Not really. Shatter, wax and budder can all land in a similar potency range, because they come from the same kind of extract. The label on a given product is a better guide than its texture. If you want to understand what the numbers on a concentrate actually mean, our piece on THC vs THCA walks through it.

What texture does change is the experience of using it: how easy it is to measure, how it behaves on a hot surface, and how much flavour comes through.

How do people use them?

Dabbing. The most common method. A small amount goes onto a heated nail or banger and is inhaled through a rig. All three work here.

Topping a bowl or joint. A small crumb of wax or a thin strip of shatter can go on top of flower. Budder is a little messier for this but still works.

Concentrate vaporizers. Many dab pens and portable vaporizers take all three. Budder and wax are the easiest to load because they scoop.

Start small. Concentrates are far stronger than flower. A rice-grain-sized amount is a common starting point. If you are new to concentrates, it is worth reading our hash and kief guide first, since hash is a gentler step up from flower.

Which one should you choose?

  • Choose shatter if you want something clean, easy to portion and tidy to store.
  • Choose wax if you want something easy to scoop and you mostly top bowls or use a pen.
  • Choose budder if flavour matters most to you and you don't mind a softer, stickier texture.

There is no wrong answer. Plenty of people keep a little of each.

How should you store concentrates?

Cool and dark. Heat softens shatter and can make budder separate. A drawer away from windows works well.

Airtight and small. Silicone or glass containers stop concentrates from drying out or picking up dust. Parchment paper is fine for shatter in the short term.

Keep it away from kids and pets. Concentrates look like candy to a curious child. Store them out of reach, and remember you must be 19 or older to buy cannabis in New Brunswick.

The Bottom Line

Shatter, wax and budder are close cousins, and the difference is mostly texture and handling. Pick the one that suits how you use it, start with a tiny amount, and store it cool and sealed.
