What Are THC Diamonds? THCa Crystals and Sauce Explained

Photo by Diego Barros on Pexels

THC diamonds are crystals of nearly pure THCa, the raw form of THC found in cannabis, and they are among the most concentrated products you can buy. They often come sitting in a runny, aromatic "sauce" that carries the strain's terpenes. Customers in Saint John ask Saint John Bud Express about them because they look so striking, so here is what they are, how they are made and how people use them.

What exactly is a THC diamond?

Crystallized THCa. Living cannabis does not make much THC directly. It makes THCa, an acidic form that does not produce a high until it is heated. When THCa is extracted and allowed to crystallize, it forms clear to off-white rocks that look a lot like rock candy or, yes, little diamonds.

Heat turns it into THC. When you dab or vaporize diamonds, the heat converts THCa into THC. That process is called decarboxylation, and it is the same thing that happens when you light flower. Our article on THC vs THCa goes deeper on the difference.

Very high potency. Diamonds are often described as testing far above flower, sometimes well over 90 percent THCa. Numbers vary by product and maker, so read the label and treat any figure as a guide.

What is "sauce" and why do diamonds come in it?

Terpene-rich liquid. As THCa crystallizes out of an extract, what is left behind is a thick, golden liquid packed with terpenes and other cannabis compounds. That liquid is commonly called sauce or terp sauce.

Diamonds and sauce together. Many products leave the crystals sitting in their sauce. The diamonds bring the strength; the sauce brings the smell and flavour. People often scoop a bit of both for each use.

Plain diamonds. Some diamonds are washed and sold on their own. They are clean and very strong, but with little flavour.

How are diamonds made?

It starts with an extract. Makers use solvents to pull cannabinoids and terpenes out of cannabis, often from fresh-frozen plant material to keep as much aroma as possible.

Then comes patience. The extract is kept under controlled conditions for days or weeks. Slowly, THCa separates out and grows into crystals while the terpenes pool around them.

Finally, separation and purging. The crystals and sauce are separated, purged of leftover solvent, and recombined or packaged apart. It is a careful process, which is part of why diamonds sit at the high end of the shelf.

How do people use THC diamonds?

Dabbing. The most common method. A small amount is placed on a heated nail or banger in a dab rig and inhaled. Many people prefer a lower temperature dab to keep the flavour.

Electronic dab rigs and concentrate vapes. These take the guesswork out of temperature and are popular with people who want an easier setup.

Topping a bowl or joint. Some people crush a small diamond and sprinkle it over flower. This is less efficient than dabbing, since some burns off, but it needs no special gear.

Not for eating as-is. Raw THCa crystals will not produce much of an effect if swallowed without heating first.

How strong are diamonds, and how should you start?

Much stronger than flower. A tiny amount of diamond can feel like several hits of a joint. Effects from dabbing come on fast.

Start with a very small amount. If you are new to concentrates, start with a dab smaller than a grain of rice, wait, and see how you feel before taking more. Some people find high-potency products overwhelming, especially without a tolerance.

Know your setup. Use a proper rig or device, keep a torch or e-rig away from anything flammable, and never drive after using concentrates.

Not the place to start. If you are new to cannabis, flower or pre-rolls are a gentler introduction. Our first-time buyer checklist helps you choose a first order.

How should you store diamonds?

Cool, dark and sealed. Keep them in their original container, out of heat and light. Warmth can make sauce runny and speed up terpene loss. Our guide to storing weed covers the basics.

The Bottom Line

THC diamonds are crystallized THCa, often paired with a flavourful terpene sauce, and they are among the strongest cannabis products available. Use a small amount, heat it properly, and give yourself time between doses. When you are ready, browse our diamonds and other concentrates, delivered with weed delivery in Saint John.
